OUR SOD – PRODUCT COMPARISON
Graff’s Turf offers the widest variety of turfgrass in the industry. Along with our own proprietary blends, we can provide fresh-cut sod grown under license from several innovative leaders in turfgrass development. Our customers have found that this means they can expect the perfect solution from our Colorado sod supplier team of advisors and growers.
VARIETIES OF GRASS
We’ve learned over the years that each customer has unique needs and situations. From the residence with heavy shade to the football field that requires excellent drainage, our Colorado sod supply company delivers a species or blend of grass that is best suited to provide the best result. Our expertise as a Colorado sod supplier has been furthered over the years through partnerships with leading turfgrass programs at universities across the country, as well as our research work with companies developing new licensed grass seed hybrids and varieties for specific climates and applications.
Kentucky Bluegrass

This is by far the most widely used grass. Our sod company’s 4-way blend has a beautiful dark green color, soft padding-like texture, and has aggressive growth habits. This grass has been utilized for many types of locations including Coors Field, Sports Authority Field at Mile High, Folsom Field, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, golf courses, parks, and thousands of private residences.
This cool season grass will stay green 8-9 months out of the year and possesses excellent winter hardiness. During summer months, it thrives in sunny areas while maintaining the aggressiveness to handle the wear and tear provided by children and dogs.
Soil Recommendations
GTF Kentucky Bluegrass has been successfully grown by our sod company in a wide range of soil types and conditions. It is not recommended in high salt conditions or in areas that lack proper drainage. Visit our website for proper soil preparation instructions.
Watering
In the hottest months, Kentucky Bluegrass requires only approximately 1 1/4 inches of water per week, which is much less than the amounts given by the average homeowner.
Fertilization
A well balanced fertilizer applied at about 4 pounds of nitrogen per 1000 square feet per year will provide adequate fertility levels. This should be applied in four to five separate applications on Easter, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and Halloween (optional). Reach out to our sod company for proper fertilization instructions.
Mowing
During the spring and fall, Kentucky Bluegrass may be mowed as low as 1 1/2 inches. Adjust mowing frequency to remove no more than 1/3 of the grass blade at a time. During the summer months, raise the mowing height to at least 2 inches. For best results, make certain the mower blade is sharp each time you mow to avoid damage to the blades of turf.
Tall Fescue

GTF Tall Fescue is a dark green, rhizome rich, turf-type tall fescue that has proven its hardiness in Colorado, withstanding both the cold winters and the hot summers. It is well adapted to climates throughout the Transition Zone, Midwest, South, West and Northeast on a wide variety of soil types. This semi-dwarf, fine textured grass is lower- maintenance and lower-growing than traditional bluegrass pallets of sod. When partnered with a sandy soil, this grass can save the customer about 15-20% on water bills.
GTF Tall Fescue has high endophyte levels for insect resistance and has excellent resistance to Brown Patch and Pink Patch. All this makes these pallets of sod suitable for use in lower use home lawns, commercial areas, parks, and golf course roughs where wear tolerance and water conservation are a consideration.
Shady Areas
One of tall fescue’s most desirable qualities is its ability to handle more shade than most other pallets of sod grown in Colorado and other Mountain regions. However, please remember that each shade situation is unique and might require some equally unique attention.
Watering
After establishment, GTF Tall Fescue needs approximately 1 inch of water per week, either from natural rainfall or irrigation. In shady areas this grass will not need as much water. However, for soils with heavy sand content, it’s possible that the grass will need more than 1 inch per week because the soil won’t hold enough moisture.
Fertilization
Tall Fescue requires a low to medium nitrogen application with 2-4 pounds per 1000 square feet of actual Nitrogen per year in most situations. This amount should be separated into three applications throughout the growing season. Please visit our website for proper fertilization instructions.
Mowing
During the more aggressive growing months, this grass needs to be mowed once every 1 to 2 weeks. The prime growing/mowing height is between 2“ and 3″. Remember that you should not cut more than 1/3 of a grass blade off in any one mowing, in order to minimize the stress on the grass. For best results, be sure the mower blade is sharp each time you mow to avoid damage to the blades of turf.

HY Performance Blue

HY-PERFORMANCE BLUE brings together the benefits of two types of turfgrass with the perfect blend of bluegrass and hybrids. Assembled with proven varieties that will satisfy the needs of the sports turf manager, the park and recreation manager as well as the homeowner looking for a great-looking lawn. We are driven to deliver a turf that will provide safe and quality turf surfaces for a variety of uses. HY-PERFORMANCE BLUE has been compromised of nearly equal portions of the following turfgrasses:
MALLARD
Kentucky bluegrass grown at our sod farm has high tiller density, providing a thick carpet that will stand up to the abuses of high traffic associated with parks and athletic fields. Mallard’s dwarf growth characteristics result in fewer mowings and reduced maintenance costs.
RIDGELINE
Demonstrates high density combined with strong drought tolerance. This bluegrass grown at our sod farm provides a dark green turf without excessive use of fertilizer, and has an outstanding spring green up, along with excellent disease resistance.
BEWITCHED
Kentucky Bluegrass possesses a low compact growth habit, making it ideal for short cut applications such as sports fields, and has been among Graff’s Turf’s most popular choices as a lawn supplier for professional football and baseball fields. Bewitched has a dark green color and is highly resistant to dollar spot, leaf spot and stem rust. Rated #1 in wear tolerance in 2005 NTEP turf trials.
BANDERA
Texas & Kentucky bluegrass hybrid grown on our sod farm combines the extensive rhizomes and heat and drought tolerance of Texas bluegrass with the turf quality and density of Kentucky bluegrass. Sports fields and parks will benefit from its high performance.
Benefits
- Strong disease resistance
- High drought resistance
- Ideal for sports fields and parks
- Can be used in shade and sun
- Reduced fertilizer inputs
Mowing
HY-Performance Blue should be maintained at a height of 1-3/4” or higher, with a recommended rate of mowing rate of every 5-7 days.
Black Beauty Fescue

Black Beauty Turfgrass varieties are a more drought resistant grass and are less disease prone than any other grass varieties previously available. Black Beauty Turfgrasses possess an invisible waxy coating covering the leaf surface of each grass blade. This protective coating is very similar to the natural, waxy layer that causes an apple to shine and helps to preserve the moisture inside the fruit, making it a naturally drought resistant grass.
Watering
After establishment, Black Beauty drought resistant grass needs approximately 1 inch of water per week, either from natural rainfall or irrigation. In shady areas this grass will not need as much water. However, for soils with heavy sand content, it’s possible that the grass will need more than 1 inch per week because the soil won’t hold enough moisture.
Fertilization
Black Beauty requires a low to medium nitrogen application with 2-4 pounds per 1000 square feet of actual Nitrogen per year in most situations.
This amount should be separated into three applications throughout the growing season. Please talk with your turf supplier for proper fertilization instructions.
Black Beauty Benefits:
- Waxy coating preserves moisture in the leaf, resulting in superior drought tolerance.
- Black Beauty is very shade tolerant and performs better than fine fescues in fertile soil.
- Black Beauty grass varieties are very resistant to leaf rust disease.
- Black Beauty will not shred or tear.
