HGT KENTUCKY Bluegrass

Durable Kentucky Bluegrass

Durable Kentucky Bluegrass

HGT stands for Healthy Grass Technology, a tough and disease resistant Kentucky bluegrass. HGT was developed in harsh climatic conditions, specifically to withstand diseases, pests and traffic. Extensive testing in various climates and conditions has proven HGT a winner.

In some of the most demanding applications, HGT has proven its durability and recovery properties. HGT is remarkably disease tolerant to Summer Patch and equally resistant to damage from billbugs and white grubs.

HGT greens up in the spring like no other bluegrass, even on sports fields that are used all winter long.

Shade Tolerance

HGT has a moderate shade tolerance. We usually recommend that it needs 4-5 hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight per day but more than that if it is filtered sunlight. Increasing mowing height in shady areas will help minimize thinning of the grass.

Watering

An established HGT lawn needs approximately 1 inch of water per week during the active growing season, either from natural rainfall or irrigation. HGT in shady areas will not need as much water. However, for soils with heavy sand content, it’s possible that the grass will need more than 1 inch per week because the soil won’t hold as much moisture.

Fertilization

You should wait about 4-6 weeks after installing your new HGT lawn to fertilize. Use a starter fertilizer that is low in Nitrogen and higher in Phosphorus and Potassium. This “transplant friendly” regimen will help reduce the shock and minimize disease. After the turf is established, generically, we recommend a fertilizer in the spring with a 1-0-1 ratio (like a 15-0-15) and in the fall, a fertilizer with a 1-0-2 ratio (like an 8-0-16).

Mowing

You should maintain your HGT field optimally between 3/4 – 1-1/2 inches. Heights above 3 inches will begin to reduce turf quality and encourage thatch buildup. Recommended mowing frequency is every five-to-seven days.
